Sir Kenny Dalglish: Former Liverpool forward and manager says he is undergoing treatment for cancer

Liverpool legend Sir Kenny Dalglish has revealed he is undergoing treatment following a cancer diagnosis.

The 75-year-old said he had planned to keep his treatment private but inadvertently revealed the news on social media.

In a statement, Dalglish said: "As my inadvertent social media post has indicated, I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer.

"Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well.

"Ideally, this would have remained private because that's the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand.

"Obviously I did not mean to make this matter public so I would appreciate it if the privacy of my family and myself are respected.

"As ever, thank you to the wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others. They are a credit to themselves."

Liverpool issued a statement of support, which read: "The support, best wishes and love of everyone at Liverpool FC are, and will continue to be, with Sir Kenny and his family.

"The club would also like to underscore his request for privacy moving forward."

Dalglish is widely regarded as one of the greatest players to ever play for Liverpool, having made 515 appearances and scored 172 goals between 1977 and 1990. During that period, he won three European Cups and eight First Division titles as Liverpool dominated English and European football.

Dalglish is also one of the most successful British managers of all-time. As player-manager he led Liverpool to their first league-FA Cup double in the first season of his dual role and then to two more league titles, in 1988 and 1990.

He also guided Blackburn to their sole Premier League title in 1995 and also managed Newcastle and Celtic.

His most recent spell in the dugout saw him return to Anfield between 2011-2012, leading Liverpool to League Cup glory in 2012 - their first major piece of silverware in almost six years.

At international level, Dalglish scored 30 goals in a record 102 games for Scotland from 1971-86, tying him as the all-time leading scorer for his country with the late Denis Law.
